Student technician places in national competition
Cody Bryan from North Clarendon, VT finished third overall in the 2018 edition of the TMC Futuretech National Student Technician Competition held in Orlando Florida September 17th and 18th. Futuretech is a competition for post-secondary student technicians held by the Technology and Maintenance Council of the American Trucking Association during their annual fall meeting. In a field of 33 contestants, Cody also won one skill station. Cody, a VAST graduate and a second year Diesel Technology student, received a new tool storage unit and many other prizes worth approximately $5,000. A second Vermont Tech student, Isaac Miles from Acton, ME placed 21st in the contest. For one week in August, Bryan was one of 10 student technicians, out of 40 applicants, who attended an all-expense paid preparatory Boot Camp in Charlotte, North Carolina. Cody had the opportunity to hone his skills with some of the best heavy duty truck technicians in the country. Bryan and five other student technicians were selected to compete with the FedEx team in Orlando. The Technology and Maintenance Council of the American Trucking Association is the country's largest organization devoted to the technical side of the trucking industry. These contests involve both written and skills tests of the contestants' diagnostic and repair abilities. Professional technicians compete in the Supertech Contest. This year 96 finalists competed in Supertech and 33 finalists competed in Futuretech. The FedEx Freight team won Supertech competition for a sixth straight year.

Student Engineers Outplay Collegiate Competitors
A team of Vermont Tech engineering students placed first at the annual Vermont Society of Engineers' (VSE) golf tournament, held September 21, 2018 at Cedar Knoll Country Club in Hinesburg. The Green Knights team, comprised of Tyler Couture, Nathaniel Cannon, Harrison Heist, and Jarek Hammerl, outscored the engineering student teams from Norwich University and the University of Vermont in a scramble format, thereby retaining the rotating trophy that goes to the winning institution each year. Couture and Heist also played last year, when they managed to return the trophy to Vermont Tech after a multi-year absence. The tournament is a fundraiser for the VSE and most of the golfers were practicing engineers; the funds raised go toward student scholarships at the colleges. For many years now, the VSE has invited the three engineering institutions in Vermont to enter a team. The Vermont Tech team was generously sponsored by an anonymous VSE member. The trophy will soon be placed on display at the Campus Center on the Randolph Center campus, along with engraved plates showing the names of past winning teams. The Vermont Tech team is coordinated by Professor Scott A. Sabol, P.E., who commented, "This is a great opportunity for students to network with engineers and to have fun at the same time. We appreciate how the VSE involves us in this event." Because this year's players will all be graduating, Prof. Sabol will be looking to recruit four new engineering students to play in the next tournament when fall rolls around again.
